About Vestígio Oculto
An open archive of what history began to tell and never finished — and of how to separate what was found from what was told afterwards.
01What it is
Vestígio Oculto is an independent editorial project, made in Brazil, about archaeology, historical mysteries and recent discoveries. Several dossiers on this site accompany episodes of the YouTube channel, @VestigoOcultoBrasil; others come before the video. In every case the dossier goes beyond the episode: it brings the full chronology, the sources, the credited images and the disagreements that do not fit in a video.
The question running through the archive is always the same: what was hidden — under the earth, the forest, the sand, the ashes, the stone, the water — and what is actually known about it today.
This English edition is a translation of the Portuguese original, with the same sources, the same images and the same credits. When a new dossier is published in Portuguese before its translation is ready, the links to it say so.
02How a dossier is made
- Chronology before theory. Dates, places and who was present come first; interpretation comes after, identified as interpretation.
- Both ends of the debate. The academic reading and the alternative one appear side by side, with the weight of evidence for each stated.
- When the sources disagree, the text says so — and does not pick a number to seem more certain than it is.
- The dossier comes before the video. The written research is the source; the episode script derives from it, not the other way around.
- Entirely original writing. The sources are listed at the end of each dossier; the text is written from scratch.
03Images
Whenever a real photograph or document of the place exists, that is what goes in — from public-domain collections or under Creative Commons licenses that allow commercial use, with author and license credited. Where no record exists, the image is a re-creation, and it is labeled as such on the figure itself. A re-creation never passes for a record.
04Corrections
Got a date, a name or a number wrong? Write through the contact page, preferably with the source. A confirmed error is corrected in the dossier, and the correction also applies to whatever comes next on the channel.
05Who makes it
Vestígio Oculto is written, researched and maintained independently, with no ties to any university, museum or company. It comes from the same creator as two other projects with the same care for sources: Arquitetura do Impossível, on how great structures were built, and Xadrez Bélico, on battles explained as a game of chess.
